I made a lava lamp to show the properties of a heterogeneous mixture. A heterogeneous mixture means the substances are easy to separate and can be easily separated. For example oil and water.
For my lava lamp, I filled a water bottle halfway with oil and the rest of the way with water. I added blue food coloring to the water just so it would be more aesthetically pleasing and so you could see it move through the oil better.
After the food coloring settled, I broke the alka-seltzer into smaller pieces. I added pieces one at a time and watched the alka-seltzer react to the water. As it reacted it formed bubbles of water and brought it up through the oil, mimicking a lava lamp.
