The goal for this lab was to create water resistant sand by coating every grain with silicone spray. Silicone is hydrophobic meaning that it repels water. Water is highly slovent which means that it can disovle many things... just a fact our skin is water resistant so water doesnt go through our pores, becasue it it did we would melt in the rain... water can dissovle sand. I started with sand that was purchaced at a pet store, we poured it into a pan and made sure it was level so that when we sprayed the silicone onto it it would coat as evenly as possible. We repeated this process three times and after mixing it with out hands we set it into the sun to let the silicone dry. Once it dried we tested it by pouring a little bit of water in one area, when the water touche the sand the sand dissperced from the water.
Looking backward: I wasnt here for the original lab when everyone else did so I did it alone. I wish I had been able to do it with everyone else because that would be a lot easier. After a while the sand seemed to make a layer over the water so that means that I couldnt make it completely water proof. Maybe if i had sprayed it more it would have been more effective.
Looking forward: Being absent really put a bump in the road because not only did I miss the actual lesson but I had to catch up in not only this class but the other other ones too. I'm really excited for the next section becasue I feel like it would be more laid back the the last ones. It's the last section and I'm reall anxious to make it count becasue I've never had a class like this that gives you the freedom to do anything you want to. Some of my future plans are making more jewelry, making paint, and sucesfully making rockcandy! (never been done in this class)
Looking inward: By coating each grain with silicone the water could not coat the sand its self, the silicone repelled it like a magnet. I explained it up in the process. We didn't get the results we wanted because we couldnt coat each and every grain with silicone. So water did get to some of the grains and they did get wet, they formed a flim over the top of the area covered in water, there was also sand at the bottom.
Take aways: Something that I learned from this lab was that there is always the possibility of failure when it comes to independant projects. This is important to remember for the rest of the section, it'd important to remember that you can always try again and next time you might succeed.
